Creating Zones
Zone
A zone is a sensing area with its own devices. It covers the space between those devices.
What is a zone?
A zone defines a specific area for presence detection. Each zone:
- Detects presence in the space between the devices you assign to it
- Spans the entire area between those devices, regardless of walls or rooms
- Creates a motion sensor entity for integration with Home Assistant or Matter
To share one transmitter across several zones, see Group.
Zone requirements
- At least 2 devices per zone (same Wi-Fi band, 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)
- Minimum 1 meter apart between devices
- Same access point. Devices must be on the same access point when using mesh networks. See mesh networks in system requirements
Creating a zone
Access zone management
- Open the TOMMY Zero dashboard in your web browser.
- Go to Zones.
- Click Create (or the + next to Zones in the sidebar).
- Choose Zone when the dialog asks for a type.
Name your zone
- Enter a descriptive name for your zone (for example "Living Room", "Kitchen", or "Upstairs")
- Choose a unique name. Zone names must be unique within your TOMMY Zero instance
- Click "Create zone" to confirm
Add devices to your zone
- Ensure devices are connected. They show up on the Devices page and, inside the zone, under Available to add
- Open the zone, then click Assign on a device
- Verify Wi-Fi band compatibility. All devices must use the same band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)
Understanding zone coverage
Your zone covers the entire space between devices:
- Through walls. Wi-Fi signals penetrate walls, so presence detection can cross rooms
- Behind obstacles. Presence can be detected behind furniture and other obstacles
- Multi-room areas. A single zone can span multiple rooms
