Creating Zones
Zones are the foundation of TOMMY. They define specific areas in your space where presence will be detected.
What Are Zones?
Zones define specific areas for presence detection. Each zone:
- Detects presence in the space between devices
- Spans the entire area between devices, regardless of walls or rooms
- Creates a motion sensor entity for integration with Home Assistant or Matter
Zone Requirements
- At least 2 devices per zone (same Wi-Fi band - 2.4GHz or 5GHz)
- Minimum 1 meter apart between devices
- Same AP - Devices must be on the same access point when using mesh networks. Please refer to the information about mesh networks in system requirements
Creating Your First Zone
Access Zone Management
- Open the TOMMY dashboard in your web browser. It opens on Zones.
- Click "Create your first zone" if you have no zones, or click Create zone (or the + next to Zones in the sidebar) to add another.
Name Your Zone
- Enter a descriptive name for your zone (e.g., "Living Room", "Kitchen", "Upstairs")
- Choose unique names - zone names must be unique within your TOMMY instance
- Click "Create Zone" to confirm
Add Devices to Your Zone
- Ensure devices are connected - they show up on the Devices page and, inside the zone, under Available to add
- Open the zone, then click Assign on a device
- Verify Wi-Fi band compatibility - all devices must use the same band (2.4GHz or 5GHz)
Understanding Zone Coverage
Your zone covers the entire space between devices:
- Through walls: Wi-Fi signals penetrate walls, allowing presence detection across rooms
- Behind obstacles: Presence can be detected behind furniture and other obstacles
- Multi-room areas: A single zone can span multiple rooms
